Workshop on FOSS for school teachers at Momin's Girls' High School

Digital Freedom Foundation(DFF) and Free Software Movement of Maharashtra(FSMM) conducted a workshop on Free and Open Source Software for teachers at K.S.H.A.B.S.H.L.M. Momin Girls’ high school on 14th of October, 2017. More than 70 teachers from the school attended the workshop to learn about the benefits of using Free and Open Source software. They would also get to know how to use a FOSS operating system and various educational applications that are supported by such operating systems. Krishnakant Mane from DFF gave an introduction to the free software movement. He shed light into its history and explained why the movement is still relevant. Ill effects of using proprietary software and benefits of switching to free software were also explained in detail. He also gave a demo of Ubuntu – a very user friendly distribution of the Free and Open Source GNU/Linux operating system.

Sidharth Adelkar from FSMM elaborated the philosophy of Free Software. He stated the four essential freedoms that a software must grant its users for it to be a free software. Following that Kranti Ghag from FSMM, Prajkta Patkar from DFF and Reshma Bhatawadekar from DFF gave demonstrations of educational software. Kranti gave a demo of Geogebra, Prajkta gave that of Kalzium and Reshma gave that of Gcompris. Students from Saraswati College of Engineering, Kharghar volunteered to help DFF and FSMM conduct the workshop.
