Welcome to Digital Freedom Foundation

This is the official home page of Digital Freedom Foundation, an organization dedicated towards bringing freedom of technology in education. Apart from advocacy based on free software, the foundation also takes up projects on Rural digital empowerment, and ICT based infra structure in rural parts of India. Needless to say, all this work centers around exclusive use of Free and Open Source Software. Besides these activities, the foundation also actively participates in development of Free and Open Source Software (Foss) for education, health and finance sectors.

Background and motivations

The organization is inspired by the impact of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) on the digital technology. in a nutshell, Digital Freedom Foundation aims to raise the quality of education and employment in rural sector using free software. However to understand this mission, We must first understand the way Information Communication Technology is growing. We must also understand the malpractices in the digital technology development and how it is countered. Information Communication Technology, or ICT for short has become such an integral part of human life that we can't imagine a single moment of life without it. This technology often called as the digital technology has raised the accuracy, efficiency and creativity of humans to an infinite level. Given the importance of ICT in our life, many organizations started to exploit people at large under the name of business. This business focuses on creating software, commonly called as a computer program. A program is that part of the Information Communication Technology that directs the technology to do a certain thing. In a common terminology, a software or a computer program is what makes your computer, mobile phone, ATM machine etc, to perform a certain task or tasks. It is like the wisdom inside the brain. Thus software becomes the most important and absolutely essential component of the ICT Eco system. Many software developing organizations provide users the permission to only use it. These users don't even get the basic right to make copies for their personal use, let alone the right to customize it. Thus, while giving end users a set of facilities to solve their problem, the software is made in such a way that they are bound in a restrictive license. More over there is no transparency in such software because the code that makes up the program is not available for evaluation or fixing errors. As a result companies developing such software can easily exploit users momentarily as well as in terms of security. More over the users are always at the mercy of the software developers. This type of business practice often leads to compromising security and introducing unscientific and brand based education.

Richard StallmanTo counter such proprietary software development, Dr. Richard Stallman founded Free Software Foundation The aim of FSF was to develop software which grants freedom of use, distribution and modification of software. This revolution is called Free Software revolution and is now running 85% of world's internet through the software which resulted out of it. Many large and medium industries as well as government departments are using FOSS for their daily work, it's real utility can only be realized when the under privileged and rural community becomes aware of it's advantages. Hundreds of commercial and public enterprises take total advantage of free software, given its cost effective deployment and free of charge unrestricted licensing. However the educational institutes are not sensitizing the students towards it. We realize that FOSS can make a big impact and give the true power of freedom in the hands of students in general and rural community in particular. For this purpose, our organization mainly thought of looking at 2 aspects. on one hand, Digital Freedom Foundation aims to bring large massive awareness in students through school and college level workshops on FOSS. On the other hand we also aim to focus on digitally empowering the rural community through training and setting up of ICT centers in villages. Besides these two major goals, the organization will be participating in many software development activities, particularly for education, finance and public health sector. We strongly believe that All this needs exclusive use of FOSS. It goes without saying that the developed software will also be released as free software.
